HOW IT WORKS

SwimLens clinics follow a simple, structured process designed to provide clear, useful visual insight into stroke mechanics.

Each clinic has three distinct phases: filming, analysis, and delivery.

In short: Swimmers and teams are only involved with filming session and will receive their analysis digitally in a matter of days. SwimLens prepares the analysis off-site and “behind the scenes”.

Phase 1

BOOKING & FILMING

  • Book– For individual swimmers, find an available open clinic on the PRICING & BOOKING page. Filming sessions are usually in 1 hour blocks, include 4-6 swimmers and take 10-15 minutes per swimmer. To schedule a team session, the coach should CONTACT US DIRECTLY.
  • Film– Filming will occur at the specified pool location. Please be at least 15 minutes early for your scheduled block time.
  • Done– You’ll be able to leave as soon as you are done filming. You will receive your report and videos with-in a week, not immediately.

On Deck Experience

  • Once you arrive, you are led in with a small group of other swimmers and directed to the pool/locker rooms.
  • Swimmers are asked to swim naturally, as they would in practice or a race, 50yds of each stroke (or 2×25 for younger swimmers). With plenty of rest in between. Everything will be explained again once on location.
  • Sometimes young swimmers feel nervous during filming or don’t stay in good view of the cameras. NO WORRIES, we’ve built in plenty of time for retakes if needed. If the filming is overwhelming, it can always be stopped. Swimmer comfort is always priority Nr.1
  • The goal of this phase is simply to capture high-quality visual information, with minimal stress.

Phase 2

POST-SESSION WORK

After the Filming:

  • Video Reviewed Off-Deck– In detail, by a USA certified swimming coach specializing in stroke mechanics.
  • Selecting Video Clips– We will prepare a folder of clips for all strokes and angles that includes real time and slow motion segments.
  • Written Feedback Prepared– We’ll also prepare a written PDF report. It will contain- what can be observed in the footage, why those observations matter for efficient movement and how different elements of the stroke relate to one another

The analysis is descriptive and observational, not prescriptive.

No drills, workouts, or technique changes are assigned. Those can be discussed with your coach if desired.

Phase 3

DELIVERY

Each swimmer receives their materials digitally vie e-mail, typically within one week of the clinic.

  • Link to Private Video Folder– Videos are uploaded to Vimeo and link e-mailed to parent or swimmer. Videos are NOT publicly accessible and are password protected (e-mailed to participant as well)
  • Written PDF Report– With observations explained in detail, by stroke. We’ll let you know exactly what clips to look at for what observation and may use stills to illustrate important points.

Sharing the report and videos with a coach or anyone else is at the discretion of the swimmer or their parents.

Location & Hosting

SwimLens sessions are offered as sanctioned clinics hosted by swim clubs. Host clubs provide pool access and administrative support, ensuring all sessions meet USA Swimming and LSC requirements.

Most clinics usually take place at facilities within the Metropolitan LSC, with Mark Twain Pool in Yonkers, NY serving as a common location. Please refer to PRICING & BOOKING page for the exact location and dates/times for all clinics.

Eligibility

Participation is open to USA Swimming–registered athletes from any LSC. Eligibility does not require membership in the host club unless the session is specifically designated as that club-only.

Filming Process

During each clinic, swimmers are filmed swimming all four strokes using a multi-angle setup that records:

  • above-water views
  • underwater views
  • side and longitudinal perspectives

All angles are captured in the same swim to preserve timing and continuity.

Filming takes ~10-15 minutes per swimmer, sessions are scheduled in 1 hour blocks and will have 4-6 swimmers present at a time. So the most you will likely spend at the filming location is 1.5 hours, often much less.

What Equipment Do We Use?

We use a professional level, custom-built filming rig with multiple cameras and a dolly to track swimmers as they swim, where possible. Here’s an image:
