What It is?

SwimLens is a swim technique video and analysis service that works with swim clubs across the region, usually with-in Metro LSC footprint.

It provides above and under water filming from multiple angles and a comprehensive written analysis about each swimmer’s technique, for all four competitive strokes.

In essence, SwimLens helps swimmers and coaches assess technique proficiency on a periodic snap-shot basis. It’s recommended to be used once per season/twice per year (SC+LC), at maximum, for most swimmers.

This is all done by short scheduled filming sessions at clinics hosted by local swim clubs (eg. at Mark Twain by Condors, for Condors swimmers) + a digital delivery of all videos and a written report e-mailed directly to participants.

Decisions on whether/how to proceed and/or implement technique changes are left entirely to participants and their coaches.

In short, SwimLens does the filming and analysis, letting coaches coach.

What You Get?

SwimLens Analysis includes:

  • VIDEOS– Real time as well as slow motion video for each stroke and from 4 different angles- usually from front under water, side views from above and below the water, and a top view from directly above the swimmer.
  • WRITTEN REPORT– A PDF report including detailed observations for each stroke from each angle.

Electronic (via e-mail) delivery to swimmers/parents is normally within a week.

For simplicity of communication and for these private Condors-only clinics, footage and analysis is shared with respective coaches as well.

Answers to some questions Condors parents/swimmers might have…

What exactly is SwimLens, and is it part of Condors… what’s the deal?

High level technique development has always been part of Condors’ main priorities. Technique monitoring and filming under and above water with cameras, although still rare in the swimming world as a general practice, shows great potential to enhance the speed of learning for young swimmers and definitely helps coaches be more effective in practices.

SwimLens is established as a totally freestanding and separate entity from Condors Swim Club. Condors serves as the hosting club for compliance, insurance and facility access purposes only and contracts with SwimLens for the clinics and analysis service. All filming and analysis is done by SwimLens.

What it all means:

  • Condors is now able to consistently offer periodic video analysis to swimmers from both locations
  • It can do so fully in compliance with Metropolitan LSC and USA Swimming insurance and sanctioning requirements
  • The Analysis service is an add-on optional service and the decision to participate is fully up to parents and swimmers. It is NOT required as club membership, in any way.
  • There is now clear separation between everyday swim practice/coaching and video analysis roles. Coaches can coach and extra in depth video and technique analysis is offered to those families/swimmers who want it, separately.
  • Condors can offer all this at a very low price point, while still covering the pool costs and time expenditure required to perform quality filming and analysis tasks. As a result video feedback becomes a more useful tool deployed consistently across seasons.

Just FYI: SwimLens was started and is run by coach Jaak from the Westchester location with the help of coach Jon. Clinics are separate from the occasional in-practice video monitoring, and serve a different purpose.

Participation & Frequency of Use

To reiterate an important point. Using SwimLens is absolutely NOT required and is an add-on separate service. We recommend maximum of 2 times per year per swimmer, once during the short course season and once during the long course season.

Filming Process

During each clinic, swimmers are filmed swimming all four strokes using a multi-angle setup that records:

  • above-water views
  • underwater views
  • side and longitudinal perspectives

All angles are captured in the same swim to preserve timing and continuity.

Filming takes ~10-15 minutes per swimmer, and is done at Condors’ Westchester location, usually during the scheduled practice hours, but in a separate lane. Date and time details of clinic availability will be distributed via normal team channels, e-mail, newsletter and/or on deck announcements.

After filming…?

Each participant (or their parents) receive digital delivery of edited videos (via Vimeo link) and a PDF written report with technique observations based on what’s seen in the videos. E-mail delivery normally takes 1 week or less.

Booking & Payment

For simplicity, booking a session and all payments are handled through Condors. Please e-mail coach Jon at jon@swimcondors.org for details.
